Dr. Dana L. Cloud Appointed Director of the School of Communication, Film, and Media Studies at UC

Dr. Dana L. Cloud has taken on the position of Director for the School of Communication, Film, and Media Studies at the University of Cincinnati (UC). As an experienced communication professional, Dr. Cloud began her academic journey at Pennsylvania State University (PSU), where she earned her undergraduate degree. During her studies, she recognized the transformative power of communication. Following her graduation from PSU, Dr. Cloud pursued a Doctorate in Rhetorical Communication at the University of Iowa. Her experiences in both undergraduate and graduate school played a crucial role in shaping her academic career.
Dr. Cloud’s distinguished academic career spans over two decades at the University of Texas (UT), where she held numerous roles, ultimately leading the graduate communication program. She later spent nine years at Syracuse University, where she continued her work in teaching and directing their graduate program in communication.
Raised on native land, Dr. Cloud was profoundly influenced by her experiences in understanding the dynamics of communication and human interaction. As a student at PSU, she connected her life experiences to communication rhetoric, fueling her passion for the field. “Communication is how we co-create,” Dr. Cloud said, emphasizing the ubiquitous nature of communication and rhetoric in every facet of life.
When asked why she chose UC, Dr. Cloud expressed her deep respect for the faculty, impressed by their research and accolades. She is eager to support the faculty, fostering their growth by ensuring they have the necessary resources and encouraging a collaborative, productive environment.
Dr. Cloud is dedicated to fostering collaboration across departments within the School of Communication, Film, and Media Studies. She believes that events, community engagement, and curriculum development are essential for creating positive synergies within the school. Dr. Cloud emphasizes that social justice is vital to building a strong, inclusive curriculum and community. She aims to diversify the faculty by bringing in more people of color to enrich and develop a well-rounded curriculum.
An advocate for collaboration, Dr. Cloud is excited to work with her colleagues to develop new courses. She sees the integration of Media Studies as a valuable addition, bringing historical context that enriches the school’s approach. Dr. Cloud believes a diverse, intellectual movement will significantly enhance the school’s impact.
With her extensive leadership experience and the respect she has earned among her peers, Dr. Cloud is confident that the School of Communication, Film, and Media Studies will continue to flourish. Her expertise in program leadership, resource management, and academic development positions her well to guide the school to new heights. Dr. Cloud is eager to advance the school, working alongside the talented faculty and students who contribute to its excellence.
