COMMUNICATION STARTS NEW CO-OP PARTNERSHIP WITH UC PROPEL
Written by Steve Depoe, A&S Communication Department Head
The Department of Communication is proud to announce that it has entered into a new partnership with UC’s Division of Professional Practice and Experiential Learning (PROPEL)to begin offering a co-op track option for a limited number of Communication majors beginning in 2015-16. The partnership will start as a three-year pilot, followed by an assessment and possible long-term renewal.

Beginning in Fall 2015, freshman and sophomore Communication majors will be able to compete for a limited number of slots. Those students chosen for the cohort will then apply and compete for co-op positions in Cincinnati and beyond, with job opportunities ranging from public relations to social media marketing to management communications to work in political and non-profit campaigns.
Applications will be reviewed based on fulfillment of pre-requisite courses, GPA, and other elements to be determined. Up to 30 students will be selected for the first cohort, with the first co-op rotations to begin in Summer Semester 2016. The plan calls for the co-op cohort to enlarged to a maximum of 40 students in year two (2016-17) and 50 students in year three (2017-18). Co-op track students will be required to complete three co-op rotations, along with introductory and mid-program courses offered by PROPEL.
Details concerning co-op track eligibility and application deadlines and review process will be finalized soon, with a more formal kick-off announcement to follow.

Co-operative education as a model was created at the University of Cincinnati at 1906. UC’s current program has been recognized by U.S. News & World Report as one of the best in the nation. Students participating in the program can earn full-time experiences and full-time pay, adding greatly to the return on tuition investment .
A&S Communication is re-joining the co-op program after an absence of more than a decade. This new initiative is one of many ways the department, our faculty members and over 5000 alumni are working together to build value for our BA and MA degrees.
